We often talk about the importance of speaking Italian<\/a><\/strong>, at least a little bit, when visiting Italy. But why is it so crucial to emphasize this aspect? One of the main reasons is of a practical nature. It will help you to manage in everyday life<\/strong>, given that most Italians do not speak English or another language<\/strong>! Don\u2019t you believe it? According to a recent study conducted by Eurostat, only 16% of Italians speak a second language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we already know that many of you, being lovers of Italy, have already completed some Italian courses or have visited Italy so many times that you probably have a certain knowledge of the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today we want to give you a few simple and effective pieces of advice, to avoid the most common errors and to make you feel a little more Italian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#1  Pronounce correctly words that are part of the Italian culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Italy there are a few \u2018sacred\u2019 words that you can\u2019t get wrong. Some of these have been borrowed by other languages, but are not used correctly. And this is certainly the case with the word \u201cpanini\u201d. If you want to eat a single sandwich in a caf\u00e9, you should not order a \u201cpanini\u201d but a \u201cpanino<\/strong>\u201d as the former form is actually the plural form of the noun, and the latter is the singular form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the same story when ordering a typical Italian coffee. Don\u2019t ask for an \u201cexpresso\u201d but an \u201cespresso<\/strong>\u201d. In this case, the barista<\/em> (barman) will still understand you, but he will also realize that you don\u2019t speak Italian very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a final example, but maybe the most important one! Do you want to thank someone who has done you a favour or been kind to you? Please, don\u2019t say \u201cgrazi\u201d (gra-tsee), but \u201cgrazie<\/strong>\u201d (gra-tsee-eh).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2  Per favore<\/em>, don\u2019t speak Spanish!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many confuse Italian with Spanish. Nothing could be more wrong: the two languages are obviously very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of this, don\u2019t order or ask for something beginning with \u201cpor favor\u201d! It\u2019s much better to say \u201cper favore<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cper piacere\u201d as a good alternative. Moreover, don’t wish someone a “good evening” by saying “buena sera”. The right way to say it is “buona sera”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, don\u2019t pluralise nouns simply by adding an -S at the end of the word. Try and follow this simple general rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3  Be sure to pronounce double consonants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Italian, words containing double consonants are very common and it\u2019s very important to pronounce both; not just from a phonetic point of view, but above all for a semantic reason. A couple of examples?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

pollo<\/em> (chicken) \u2013 polo<\/em> (pole or polo)
sonno<\/em> (sleep) \u2013 sono<\/em> (I am)
rissa<\/em> (sleep) \u2013 risa<\/em> (laughter<\/em>)
notte<\/em> (night) \u2013 note<\/em> (notes)
palla<\/em> (ball) \u2013 pala (shovel)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not pronouncing the double consonant can lead to real mistakes, don\u2019t you think so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#4  Beware false friends<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pay attention to the words that have one meaning in your language, but another in Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few examples? Especially if you speak English, pay attention to how you use the word \u201ccamera<\/strong>\u201d: in Italy it means \u201cbedroom\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same goes for \u201cocean<\/strong>\u201d. If you say “oceano” translating literally from “ocean” it will sounds very odd as the ‘boot-shaped’ country does not have oceans actually but seas more precisely. That’s why it is far better to say \u201cmare\u201d (sea). And what about \u201cconfetti<\/strong>\u201d? In Italy, if you use this word you are referring to sugared almonds, the quintessence of Italian weddings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But you also need to be careful with languages that are very similar to Italian, like French. One of the most important examples of all? \u201ccostume<\/strong>\u201d, which means \u201csuit for men\u201d in French, but \u201ccostume\u201d means \u201cswimsuit\u201d in Italian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#5  Introduce yourself correctly, without misunderstandings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We have seen that using the wrong word or expression can lead to embarrassing situations. This can happen also when you introduce yourself in Italian and both people shake hands by saying \u201cpiacere!<\/strong>\u201d, which means \u201cit\u2019s a pleasure to meet you\u201d. But please, do not say \u201cmi piace\u201d, as sometimes happens\u2026 translated, this means \u201cI like it\u201d. It would be funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
