{"id":961,"date":"2014-09-03T14:35:58","date_gmt":"2014-09-03T12:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/?p=961"},"modified":"2021-04-30T12:39:19","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T10:39:19","slug":"world-without-italy-country-great-beauty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/world-without-italy-country-great-beauty\/","title":{"rendered":"A World Without Italy: The Country of the Great Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In order to better appreciate the world we live in, since we often take so much for granted, it\u2019s a good mental exercise to ponder what our lives would be like without so much of what we count on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a real brain teaser, try to imagine a world without Italy, the country of the \u201cgreat beauty\u201d. For instance, if Mount Etna or Mount Vesuvius had erased the \u201cItalian boot\u201d before civilization had taken root, where, other than completely lost, would we be? Well, for starters, it would certainly give map makers fits. How could they decide where the Tyrrhenian Sea ends and the Adriatic Sea begins? They\u2019d have to find some place else to put the Vatican. Also, can you picture Switzerland and Austria as sunny, laid-back Mediterranean playgrounds? Hardly. The Leaning Tower of Zurich? Yipes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Italy has always been one of the <strong>major crossroads of the civilized world<\/strong>, literally and figuratively, serving as a collector and clearinghouse of diverse elements of culture and creativity. Without Italy, world history, religion, science, art, and culture would all need to be revised and\/or relocated. The legendary \u201cGrand Tour\u201d of Europe, that rite-of-passage for the European elite, would have to be shortened to a weekend bus trip. Goethe, instead of writing \u201cJourney to Italy\u201d, would have been limited to penning something like \u201cDay-tripping in Dusseldorf\u201d. Or, if the Trevi Fountain didn\u2019t exist, men\u2019s trousers would fall down from the weight of all the coins that had nowhere to be tossed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breeding ground for innovative ideas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Innovations, inventions and scientific breakthroughs<\/strong> would be hard-pressed to get themselves created if Italy wasn\u2019t around to provide the necessary fertile ground for their genesis. <em>Optical glasses<\/em> come from Italy, as do barometers and thermometers. Today\u2019s <em>smart phones<\/em> can trace their origins back to the genius of Italian Antonio Meucci, whose 1871 telephonic device pre-dated the patented work of A.G. Bell by five years. The world\u2019s first <em>high-speed train<\/em>? Italian, of course. And, speaking of high-speed, let\u2019s not forget <em>Ferrari, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Maserati<\/em>, and <em>Ducati<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/COPERTINA_INVENZIONI_ITALIANE-619x216.jpg\" alt=\"Italian inventions\" class=\"wp-image-967\" title=\"Italian inventions\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/COPERTINA_INVENZIONI_ITALIANE-619x216.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/COPERTINA_INVENZIONI_ITALIANE-619x216-300x107.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Art!<\/strong> It\u2019s a good thing for Michelangelo that, if Italy wasn\u2019t around, he wouldn\u2019t have existed, either. Without a Sistine Chapel to use as a canvas, it\u2019s hard to imagine him painting, say, the ceiling in the Agbar Tower of Barcelona.<em> Italy is home to more than 50% of the world\u2019s art treasures<\/em>, and Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello, Botticelli, Caravaggio, and a bevy of other fine artists have set standards that are hard to match. Opera got its start in Italy, and it has been nurtured by the likes of Bartoli, Caruso and Pavarotti. No Italy means no Rossini, Puccini, or Verdi. Italy has given the world the piano, the violin, and the cello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/botticelli_venus2.jpg\" alt=\"The Birth of venus by Botticelli\" class=\"wp-image-973\" title=\"The Birth of Venus by Botticelli\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/botticelli_venus2.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/botticelli_venus2-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/botticelli_venus2-1024x656.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/botticelli_venus2-768x492.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/botticelli_venus2-1536x984.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> The world of <strong>style and fashion<\/strong> looks to Italy for direction. Italy has scores of famous fashion designers. In addition to Prada, trendsetting Armani, Versace, Ricci, and Cardin are spoken here. Milan, soon to host the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/expo-milano-2015-a-great-showcase-for-italy\/\">2015 Expo Milan<\/a>, is one of the world\u2019s greatest fashion centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> For <strong>\u201cfoodies\u201d and wine<\/strong> buffs, the world would be a poorer place, indeed, were it not for contributions from Italy. Italian vineyards produce more wine than those of any other country. From A-to-Z, Italian culinary delights range from Abbacchio (milk-fed lamb) to the ever-popular Zucchine summer squash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gate-away.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Supreme_pizza.jpg\" alt=\"Italian cuisine\" class=\"wp-image-976\" title=\"Italian cuisine\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not that Italy doesn\u2019t have its share of problems, as many areas of the country are still struggling to recover from natural and financial disasters. The volatile economy has been slow to rebound from the current slump that has afflicted much of Europe. The Italian people are resilient, however, and they will rise from this latest downturn. Italians are used to ups-and-downs, which could explain why Italy has more elevators than anywhere else on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the well-known political satirist and comedian Maurizio Crozza has pointed out in a recent monologue dedicated to the beauty of Italy, that despite her problems, Italy is still a vital nation, full of energy, emotion and enterprise, and there is even talk that the upcoming Expo Milan 2015 may adopt that notion, \u201cthe world without Italy\u201d, as one of the Expo\u2019s themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, at <a title=\"homes for sale in Italy\"
