Monuments and places of interest:
Vittoriale degli Italiani, a monumental citadel built on the shores of Lake Garda as the home of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, who lived there from 1921 to 1938. It was designed by the architect Giancarlo Maroni and since 1925 is a national monument, a destination of interest for tourists and not. The Vittoriale extends for about nine hectares on the hills of Gardone Riviera in a panoramic position overlooking the lake. The visitor is welcomed by the monumental entrance consisting of a pair of arches in the center of which is a fountain which bears a passage from the Secret Book in bronze letters, the last work written by Gabriele d'Annunzio: "Inside this triple circle of walls, where translated into living stones is already that religious book which I thought in charge of the rites of the country and of the Latin victors called Il Vittoriale ». To surmount the fountain a pair of cornucopias and a tympanum with the famous D'Annunzio motto "I have what I have given". From the entrance arches there is a double path: the first slightly uphill leads to the priory, the house-museum of Gabriele d'Annunzio, and climbing again to the military ship Puglia and the mausoleum of the heroes with the poet's tomb; the second leads to the gardens, the arengo, and, through a series of terraces sloping down towards the lake, you reach the lemon house and orchard. After passing the entrance and taking the road towards the priory, you will find the Pilo del Piave with the sculpture of the chained Victory by the sculptor Arrigo Minerbi, the Pilo del Dare in pitcher, that is to hit the mark, hit. On the left is the Parlaggio, the amphitheater designed by Maroni between 1931 and 1938, whose works only ended in 1953, leaving it, however, unfinished. Inspired by the theaters of classicism, and in particular by that of Pompeii where Maroni was sent on a mission together with the sculptor Renato Brozzi, according to the client's instructions he had to use red Verona marble slabs to cover the raw materials of "modernity", such as reinforced concrete, used for the stalls and tiers. The structure remained in this poor state due to lack of funds, until the work was actually completed in March 2020 and inaugurated in July. The amphitheater enjoys a view of the lake having as its natural scenography Mount Baldo, the island of Garda, the fortress of Manerba in which the German poet Goethe seemed to recognize Dante's profile and the Sirmione peninsula. Every summer it is home to a season of shows that over the years has brought the greatest Italian actors to the stage, étoiles of the dance world such as Carla Fracci and Eleonora Abbagnato, international music stars such as Lou Reed, Michael Bolton, Patti Smith and Ben Harper. Climbing further you reach the Dalmatian square which takes its name from the pilus dominated by the Virgin of Dalmatia. This space is overlooked by the priory, the house-museum of Gabriele d'Annunzio, the Schifamondo, the towers of the archives and the small temple of Vittoria with a bronze copy of the famous winged Victory of Brescia from the classical era. On the right side are two of the last cars owned by d'Annunzio during his life: the Fiat Tipo 4 and the Isotta Fraschini. The top of the Vittoriale is occupied by the mausoleum, a funeral monument built after the death of d'Annunzio The monument is inspired by the funerary mounds of the Etruscan-Roman tradition and consists of three circles in Botticino marble to represent the victories of the humble, the craftsmen and of heroes. At the center of the upper esplanade is the burial of d'Annunzio and around the arks of ten of Rijeka heroes and legionaries dear to the poet Guido Keller, Giuseppe Piffer, Ernesto Cabruna, Mario Asso, Italo Conci, Adriano Bacula, Antonio Locatelli, Luigi Siviero , Antonio Gottardo and Riccardo Gigante.
