HISTORICAL NOTES ON THE VILLAGE OF MONTESCUDAIO

The earliest historical documents date back to around the 11th century, when the village consisted of a castle owned by the Della Gherardesca family. These settled in Montescudaio on a permanent basis and gave rise to an autonomous branch of the lineage. The ‘Counts of Montescudaio’ were the protagonists of several acts of rebellion against the Republic of Pisa, which dominated these territories in the Middle Ages. The rebellions were tamed, but in 1406, when Pisa and the entire countryside were sold to Florence, the Counts hastened to be accredited at the court of the new lords, thus managing to obtain the appointment of vicars in Maremma. However, the inhabitants of Montescudaio, with the authorisation of Florence, constituted themselves into a Commune; they provided themselves with new statutes and succeeded in ousting the counts from the castle. The Commune ceased to exist in 1648, when the entire area became a feud of the Marquis Ridolfi of Florence. The feuds were abolished a century later, but the subsequent agrarian reform of 1770. did not prevent the land from being divided between only two owners. In 1846, various damages were caused by a violent earthquake that destroyed the oldest houses in the castle. Further devastation came with the earthquake of 1871. After the unification of Italy, the town experienced slow development; in 1927, there were almost three thousand inhabitants, but after the Second World War, there was a demographic collapse due to immigration to the new towns on the Livorno coast. In the second half of the 20th century, there was an expansion of the settlement in the hamlet of Fiorino, in the immediate vicinity of Cecina, while the nearby locality of Poggio Gagliardo constituted the municipality's main industrial and craft area.
