San Mommè (or Sammommè) is a small town in the municipality of Pistoia just 15 km from the city (less than 20 minutes by car) and 50 km from the famous art city of Florence, located near to the spring water source of Ombrone Pistolese, about 555 meters above sea level.
The town is a small jewel nestled in the “Tosco-Emiliano” Appenine chain, a historic village surrounded by uncontaminated nature and where time follows a different rhythm.
This area boasted regular seasonal visits by Caterina de Medici, together with all the Court, in the periods where deer hunting takes place. The village was well known even in the time of the grand duchy, but only in the early ‘900s it began to transform itself in a popular and valued holiday spot. This was also aided by the train station which arrived around 1930.
The houses, which were initially built around the small oratory of Pian di Ripalta in the farmhouse of Savaiana (also known as Il Chiesino), were later developed around the Pieve (historic stone parish church typical of the Romanesque period). With the passing of time new houses started to be built around the chestnut forests which surround the area.
The village fortunately did not undergo speculative building, as the Pro Loco of the town acquired the central spaces, designating one for the use of parking and the other for a beautiful park called Il Pratone.
The “centre”, whose Piazza was recently restored, rises around the Pieve di San Matteo and its bell tower.
The Pieve and the building in which the apartment is situated are both located on this Piazza and from the windows of the living room it is possible to enjoy a splendid view of the church (see photo n.).
Located just opposite the Piazza and easily accessible from the apartment stairs one can find a bar/gastronomia/baker able to supply all basic and essential necessities. The Town also boasts two hotels, a “focacceria” and a rotisserie.
The village also provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy sports activities and boasts a Tennis court, a swimming pool, a football field and a lake for sport fishing.
