Historical characteristics
The village of San Michele Extra was born around the cloister of the Benedictine nuns of San Michele in Campagna that set themselves up here in 106. The cloister became soon an authority in the countryside, thanks to the privileged offered by the Scaligeri family. The lord of Della Scala were particularly generous with the Benedictine monasteries, in particular the cloisters, that were an easy way to solve the complicated and unsolvable problems of the prestigious family. In fact in the cloister of San Michele in Campagna many girls of the family became nuns and the three daughters of Pietro of Dante Alighieri.
