In the heart of the old medieval centre of Gaeta, in one of its oldest and most charming streets, Casa Esmeralda is a unique property that is perfectly positioned to offer you the very best in waterside living. Be it sailing in the warm mediterranean waters, relaxing on sandy beaches, exploring natural reserves, browsing through museums & historic sites or shopping & dining, the town of Gaeta offers something wonderful for everyone.
The beautiful cobbled lane to the old palazzo that houses Casa Esmeralda has been recently restored and is characterised by a succession of old Medieval buildings, towers and very old churches, including the 9th century Santa Lucia church, which eventually became a royal chapel. All buildings along the street date from the 9th to the 12th century, the time when Gaeta was both the political and civil centre of the flourishing Dukedom. Wandering these streets and alleys you will encounter artefacts from across the ages that testify to Gaeta's rich history and have the magical effect of transporting us to another time.
Casa Esmeralda is reached by foot or scooter, and there is ample space for car parking just a few moments away at the end of the lane.
Arriving at the property, an impressive set of double wrought iron gates open up onto a stone paved courtyard from where the cellar and storage rooms can be reached. The two rooms of this cellar will provide you with plenty of storage space and also a place to park your scooter or push bikes, certainly the best way to travel during summertime here.
The shared stairwell of the palazzo has many original features intact, including a roman marble column with inscriptions, the original stone stairs and a medieval fresco of the Madonna and Child.
The property has two independent entrance doors which will allow you the choice to use it as one large 3 level home or 2 separate well appointed apartments.
Due to its impeccable design the property works well in either configuration. Used as 2 apartments would give you the possibility of lucrative summer rentals, the property would also function very well as a luxurious B & B.
Used as one property there are a total of 4 double bedrooms and 4 full sized bathrooms. All bedrooms have lovely views and feature built in wardrobes. The bathrooms have each been restored to a high level with each having an individual design & colour scheme.
There are 2 large living rooms, both of which feature working corner fireplaces with built in shelving, and both feature incredible views over the Gulf, across to the mountains and of Gaeta's stunning skyline.
There are 2 kitchens, one servicing the lower level and the other servicing the upstairs & grand terrace. As you would expect, both kitchens have been fitted with high end products, including chef's 5 burner gas stoves & dishwashers. The large upstairs kitchen enjoys direct access to the largest terrace and it's covered dining area, and also has the space for a kitchen dining table within it.
Inside, the property has been completely restored to satisfy the requirements of modern life and tastefully finished with valuable, quality materials, including handmade majolica tiles from Vietri.
The large terraces offer spectacular panoramic views of the unique Gaeta skyline with its bell-towers, historic buildings, roof gardens and of the beautiful Gulf with its surrounding mountains of more than 1000 mt. high that plunge into the blue sea.
All terrace areas have been tiled with subtle blue/green handmade majolica tiles that perfectly echo the waters of the Gulf.
The upper level terrace offers 125 square meters of outdoor space and boasts a large dedicated kitchen & dining room that opens directly on to the sheltered dining area of the terrace. Built with retractable sail-like shades, this area is bound to become the main hub for entertaining. Other features of the terrace include a full custom-built BBQ area, water, electricity, built in seating and storage closets.
An independent external staircase brings you to the lower split level terraces (45 square meters) which enjoy those same incredible views, and which provide a wonderful outdoor space for the lower living room and double bedroom - both rooms having direct access to the terrace from their french doors.
Gaeta has been a popular resort town since the Roman times, a place where Consuls, Emperors and the wealthy spent their summers. In the middle ages the peninsula of Gaeta became a strategic fortress town and enjoyed prosperity as it became the centre of sea-trade on the mediterranean.
The peninsula is often referred to as the Odysseus Riviera - the Jewel of Lazio, and has a beautiful harbour on one side, gorgeous beaches on the other and rich unspoilt natural reserves & mountains surrounding it. Situated 120km from Rome and 100km form Naples, with a travelling time of 2 hours from Fiumicino International Airport and 1 hour 20 minutes from Naples International Airport, and similar travelling times to these main airports by train from the neighbouring town of Formia.
From Formia, just 5 - 10 minutes by car, you can catch a ferry to the magical island of Ponza.
The beautiful medieval quarters of Gaeta are set along the edge of this peninsula, taking full advantage of the glorious harbour of the Tyrrenian Sea, dominated over by the magnificent 6th Century Aragonese Angevine Castle.
