Poggio Nativo is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about 45 km northeast of Rome and about 20 km southwest of Rieti. Poggio Nativo borders the following municipalities: Casaprota, Castelnuovo di Farfa, Frasso Sabino, Mompeo, Nerola, Poggio Moiano, Scandriglia, Toffia. Poggio Nativo is home to the Santacittarama Theravada Buddhist monastery. The economy is mostly based on agriculture (cereals, olives, vines, fruit) and cattle raising.

At the end of the historic centre, in a small square of access to the country, with the fountain, the house is easily accessible by car only for loading and unloading, but outside of the access door of the village, there is a large area for parking.

Ancient paths start from the village and offer the possibility to take beautiful walks on the banks of the river Farfa following the paths of the fifteenth century, in a landscape that appears not to have been touched by the progress.

The authentic small town, beautiful countryside in Lazio.

The property in Lazio offers proximity to Rome and the opportunity to enjoy and explore the less touristy and lesser know areas of Lazio including the Alta Tuscia and Sabina. This region was the heartland of the flourishing and cultivated Etruscan civilisation and here, alongside the breath-taking scenery, you will find a magical land of castles, little towns connected by winding country roads, Etruscan tombs, early frescoed chapels and Farnese villas along with elegant restaurants and family run trattoria...

LAZIO SABINA - Fifty kilometres north-east of Rome, following the eastern bank of the Tiber River and the Sabine hills, lies the territory of Sabina. The towns and villages here are traditional Italian and focus on local customs and traditions rather than existing for the tourists. Here you can have a very 'Italian' holiday, immersing yourself in life as a 'local', if only for a week or two! A holiday Villa or apartment in Lazio also offers good value for money along with the advantage of a lower cost of living to that of Tuscany. Tourism in the countryside and small towns here is still in its infancy, despite the areas historical importance and there is a wealth of things to do and see! Here "Canneto di Fara" Europe's oldest olive tree at 2000 years old lives and still produces a heavy crop each year - perhaps not surprising that the Sabina area is famous for its olive oil! Hard to believe it's only an hour from Rome...

The ancient traditions of Sabina entwined with religion and agriculture can still be experienced during the many local fairs which are held frequently throughout the seasons. From early spring to late autumn the medieval villages are filled with a festive atmosphere culminating in a spectacular firework display. You can't miss these events if you want to taste the local gastronomic specialities and the area's country-style dishes, made with first class agricultural products and Sabina's finest extra virgin olive oils - a fantastic day out and a real treat for the taste buds!

Poggio Nativo is an Italian town 2 623 inhabitants in the province of Rieti in the Lazio region. In the majority of medieval documents available, the name of the "Podium de Donadei" probably derives from the name of what is identified as the founder of the country, a farmer from a place called Donadeo (or Leaders). Its location perched high on a hill, in medieval times made it difficult to access and it was a great advantage for the defence of the country, a safe refuge for the population during the barbarian invasions came to be called the "podium Of the" donum dei, gift of God. After the evolution of the Latin language, and then the vulgar the name of the country becomes POGGIO NATIVO

TERRITORY

This ancient medieval village stands on a steep spur of rock that rises 415 metres s.l.m, on the southern foothills of the Monti Sabini. The municipal area is kind of hilly, typical of the Sabina region, rich in vegetation. The characteristic of the area is the cultivation of the olive trees and grapes, The natural landscape is, therefore, dominated by the presence of typical crops of the area, and the colours range from brilliant green of the vineyards and olive groves, and golden yellow of the wheat that alternate with the spots characteristics of the Colli Sabini. The Farfa river flows along the territory of the municipality.

THE ABBEY OF FARFA

Farfa Abbey profoundly influenced the history of the whole of the Sabina area, having controlled, during it's "golden age", nearly all the nearby towns and villages. But it wasn't only important on a local level, in fact, it was one of the most powerful Benedictine monasteries in Europe and played a major role in the power struggles between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire, opposing the power of the Papacy for centuries. The role of the Abbey in conserving knowledge and culture and in spreading new technologies during a period of instability, invasions and depopulation caused by plague should not be underestimated.

In the heart of the ancient Sabina region, at the foot of the Mount Acuziano, in a mystic atmosphere of silence all over the village, stands the Abbey of Farfa. Approaching the Abbey, which is surrounded by fascinating verdant nature, you can feel the morning fresh air heated by a bright sun.

The Abbey of Farfa is a fascinating place, full of peacefulness and simplicity, as simple as the Benedectine monks who live in its profound spiritual atmosphere. Their ordinary life is devoted to God and the Holy Virgin Mary.

In 1928 the Abbey was declared a national monument for its architectural and artistic beauty. With its thousand-year history, through periods of splendour and decadence, destructions and renaissance, the Abbey has remained a cultural and spiritual centre thanks to the founders S. Lorenzo Siro (St.Lawrence Siro) and S. Tommaso da Moriana (St.Thomas from Moriana) and the Blessed Placido Riccardi and Ildefonso Schuster.

Several kings, emperors and Popes (the latest was Pope John Paul II, 19th May 1993) have visited the Abbey throughout the centuries.

Today thousands of visitors admire the cultural and artistic heritage, spending some time or even days in this peaceful place in order to rest their mind and soul. Refreshments and accommodation are provided.

Walking through the park and the gardens visitors can also admire the small old quaint village of Farfa, the property of the "Filippo Cremonesi" founding, which includes the pretty houses and the workshops run by skilled craftsmen.

TERMINILLO

An epic mountain.
For both cyclists from around the world and that for winter sports. Terminillo has made the history of skiing in central Italy. Today it is a destination for all mountain sports.

Mount Terminillo, also known as the "Mountain of Rome", is one of the most important and best equipped winter resorts in South-Central Italy.

It is easy to reach (located approximately 80 km from Rome, 150  km from Perugia, 130 km from Ascoli, and 180 km from Pescara) on roads which are always open and served by public transport.

Mount Terminillo is a massif, whose highest peak reaches 2217 m above sea level. The southern slope that overlooks the plain of Rieti, much man-made and used for tourism, has more elevation than the northern, more rugged and wild looking towards the plateau of Leonessa.
Terminillo was launched for tourists in the thirties after a visit to Benito Mussolini.  He was "impressed by the beauty of the mountain range." It was made a  broad road from Lisciano Pian De 'Rosce, supplemented subsequently to Terminillo. In the thirties, then it starts the tourist boom with the first ski slopes equipped.  In 1940, he was made the cable car, still it exists. From the fifties to the seventies was a Terminillo ski resort of reference for all of Central Italy. Today this mountain regularly sees growing interest in sports activities such as hiking, sky race, and hiking in summer as well as winter. Terminillo has hosted many times, in the town of Campoforogna at an altitude 1670 meters, the stage finish of the Tour of Italy. In particular, the Terminillo (Campoforogna) boasts the stretch with the largest number of mountain top finishes in the Tour of Italy (9 times). Many also transits on top of the Sella di Leonessa, the last in 2007. The climb of the Terminillo, to the saddle Lioness (1885 m), the southern slope from Vazia-Rieti is considered one of the toughest climbs of central Italy.  Along with that of the Gran Sasso (Campo Imperatore) and the Blockhaus, both for the total elevation gain (1,390 mt), that the length (21.3 km) and slopes (average 6.5%, with peaks up to 13%). A little 'softer and shorter (15.4 km at 6.1% average with peaks of 10%) by climbing the northern slope of Leonessa.

RIETI

Rieti, Latin Riete, city, Lazio (Latium) regione, central Italy, on the Velino River in the Abruzzi Apennines, just southeast of Terni. The ancient town was first settled by the Sabines and then became the Roman Reate. It belonged to the Lombard duchy of Spoleto in the early European Middle Ages and later passed to the Papal States (popes often resided there). Surrounded by 13th-century walls, its notable buildings include the 12th-century Romanesque cathedral (much rebuilt), the episcopal palace (1283), and the Palazzo Comunale with a museum and picture gallery. Rieti is a road junction for Rome (53 miles [87 km] southwest), Terni, and L'Aquila. Among its industries are woolen and rayon mills and a beet-sugar refinery. Pop. (2006 est.) mun., 47,050.

LAZIO

Lazio, Latin Latium, regione, west-central Italy, fronting the Tyrrhenian Sea and comprising the provinces of Roma, Frosinone, Latina, Rieti, and Viterbo. In the east Lazio is dominated by the Reatini, Sabini, Simbruini, and Ernici ranges of the central Apennines, rising to 7,270 feet (2,216 m) at Mount Terminillo. Although the mountains are mainly limestone, the valleys and lower foothills of the pre-Apennines are fertile. The western part of the region is a coastal plain centring on the Roman Campagna (Campagna di Roma) and extending northwestward into the Maremma and southeastward through the Pontine Marshes (Agro Pontino) to the plains of Fondi and Formia. Northwest and southeast of Rome are four groups of ancient volcanoes, the Volsini, Cimini, Sabatini, and Albani mountains, each containing one or more crater lakes, those of Bolsena, Vico, Bracciano, Albano, and Nemi. Southeast of the volcanic Alban Hills (Colli Albani), the stark, denuded Lepini, Ausoni, and Aurunci mountains extend to the Garigliano River, the southern limit of Lazio. Until the late 19th century, much of the lowland area of Lazio was marshy and malarial. Major reclamation works in the Maremma, the Campagna di Roma, and the Pontine Marshes in the early 20th century resulted in drainage and repopulation of the plain and transformed the region's agriculture. Migratory grazing was greatly reduced; wheat, corn (maize), vegetables, fruit, meat, and dairy products now dominate in the lowlands, while olive groves and vineyards cover the slopes. Vineyards abound near Montefiascone, on the Alban Hills, and around Terracina and Formia. Civitavecchia and Gaeta are the main fishing ports.

Light industry has developed with the help of a regional development program, the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno (Fund for the South), particularly in and around the new satellite towns of Aprilia, Pomezia, and Latina, south of Rome. Rome is the region's commercial and banking centre, but it has little industry apart from artisan and specialist industries, such as fashions. Large numbers of persons are employed by the government. In the rest of the region only chemical and pharmaceutical plants, food industries, papermaking, and a few small machine industries are of significance. Rome, including the Vatican, is Italy's largest tourist centre, and tourism is also important at resorts in the Alban Hills, the Apennines, and along the coast.

Lazio's transportation is also dominated by Rome, which is the rail and road hub of central Italy and has one of Europe's busiest international airports. Civitavecchia, the only port of importance, is noted chiefly for its trade with Sardinia. For history of the region, see Latium. Area 6,642 square miles (17,203 square km). Pop. (2006 est.) 5,304,778.
