Giudecca and the Jewish Quarter: until the Kingdom of Spain decided to banish them from their lands, Jews, in this neighborhood, lived, prayed in synagogues, traded in their stores and took purifying baths. The functionality of this ward, however, even without the multitude of Jews that made it alive, stayed unchanged until the 1950s. To this day, some Jewish traces remain: Via della Mesquita led to the ancient synagogue where today stands the roofless church with the Gothic portal of San Giovannello. Walking down Via della Giudecca, in the church of San Filippo, located opposite the small square of the ancient market, one can visit Ortigia Sotterranea: one descends on several levels to an altitude of -18 meters and can see a natural water spring in which Jews took a purifying bath called miqweh.
