About Abruzzo

As in any other central Italian region, Abruzzo can offer you many different landscapes and activities. You can enjoy the Adriatic sea and have fun in one of the many coast towns, visit the hinterland to relax and taste the typical food of the region, or just move towards the mountains and enjoy the wonderful nature and landscapes of the region. Abruzzo is the perfect place where you can decide to move from the beach to the mountains in less than one hour!

In Abruzzo, nature tourism is a very strong reality and it represents the largest part of the sector. By the Adriatic sea there are many beautiful towns as Giulianova, Vasto, Alba Adriatica and Pescara, where you can relax yourself on the beach and have fun at night. But the mountain has still much more importance for tourism. Thanks to the beauty of the Gran Sasso mountain range, there are lots of different activities you can practise here. There are many bike-tours, realized to discover new corners of the wide territory, and to live really inside the nature. If you love riding, in 2006 has been created the “Ippovia” circuit on the Gran Sasso, the longest one in Italy, that goes trough “Gran Sasso National Park” and reaches the provinces of L’Aquila, Pescara and Teramo with a wonderful route of 320 km that can make you appreciate better the environmental resources of this “green” region. From December to April there’s a lot of snow so you can ski and practise snow board, rafting, cross-country skiing and everything else you like. The most famous towns to practise ski and all the connected activities are Rivisondoli, Roccaraso and Pescocostanzo.

Talking about the economy in Abruzzo, the economic resources are almost totally linked to the farm production, but breeding has it importance too.

The industrial production is expanding continuously, especially near to the main towns (Pescara, L’Aquila, Teramo and Chieti). To notice is the production of sugared almonds in Sulmona, a town in the hinterland of Abruzzo famous worldwide for this activity. 

Culture and society

If are interested in buying a property in Abruzzo, it is important to understand this culture:

Food and wine is a very important resource of the region and there are lots of typical products. About dessert, the most famous are: neole, calgiunitti, cicerchiata and the Parrozzo of Pescara. About wines there’s a big tradition: for white wine the most famous is the Trebbiano and for red wine the Montepulciano is the best. The production of olive oil is well developed and prestigious. Besides there’s a big production of pasta (in particular fresh pasta thanks to the good quality of the water), of cheese and of cold cuts. A special product realized in the plateau of Navelli is the saffron. About meat, thanks to the great development of the breeding you can choose between a big variety, but a specialty of the region are the “arrosticini”, a kind of little skewer with sheep meat.

For music addicted, there are some good festival you can go every year. The “Etnoroch Festival” in Atri on August, the “Blues under the stars festival” in l’Aquila on July, the “Musicarte” in Pescara from June to July. These are only the most famous events but, since the tourist market is increasing quickly, there are lots of new festival and show in Abruzzo.

From the 26th of June to the 5th of July 2009, there’ll be an important sport event in Pescara, the “Mediterranean Games”, the biggest sport manifestation for the Mediterranean countries.

Facilities

Abruzzo overall has a good connection network, this is an aspect that anyone who is considering of investing in homes for sale in Abruzzo should take into consideration.

If you want to reach the region by car, there are two different motorways that connect Rome with Abruzzo (A25 and A24) and the motorway A14 covers the entire region along the coast. The freeways connect the coast to the hinterland.
The most developed railway is the Adriatic one the goes from north to south along the coast; besides there are many other railways in the hinterland.

The most important airport is in Pescara, the “International Airport of Abruzzo”; another one is in Preturo, the “Parks Airport”.

There are three universities in Abruzzo, the “Gabriele D’Annunzio” University in Pescara and Chieti, the “Vincenzo Rivera” University in L’Aquila and the University of Teramo.

Owning properties in Abruzzo means also being in love with nature and wilderness.
As we already said, nature is a fundamental resource of Abruzzo. There are three national park: the “Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park”, the “Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park”, and the “Majella National Park”. In these parks, there are some rare animal race and the brown bear, the European otter and the chamois of Abruzzo. Walking around the nature of the region is a special experience you can’t miss. You can also find many health resort, the most famous are in Caramanico, Raiano and Popoli, where you can let yourself go and think about your health.
