CAROVIGNO
Carovigno is a town located in the inner belt of High Salento, on a hill of Murgia. Many are the hypotheses that regards the birth of his name. The most discussed are that of Messapian origin and that of Nicola Corcia, according to which the name derives from the Greek Καρπινη, subsequently Latinized. What remains of the ancient walls, of the acropolis and the archaeological material found in its territory, attest to its Messapian origin, however, there is no certain information about its foundation: some historical evidence dates back to the twelfth century B.C.
