Description

Grizzana Morandi (Alto Apennines of Blognese)
Do you know the high hills of Bologna? I mean those that embrace Porretta, in fact, a bit earlier between Vergato and Riola. Here, in this stretch of the Apennines, the landscape changes tone: it is not yet a real mountain, but neither plain. They are high hills, almost suspended, which look like green waves at height. Wheat, hay, oak and chestnut forests alternate with elegance. And amid all this nature, historic villages, artistic monuments, natural wonders emerge. Want to know which ones? I'll tell you about it in the end.

This is one of those areas that will, over time, become increasingly sought after. An investment for the future: good air, altitude, fresh air even in summer. And it is not isolated at all: there are two train stops and a main road that in less than an hour takes you to Bologna.

And it is from this street that my story begins. Turns out to the right and enters a narrow street that follows the profile of the hills, climbing and going down gently. Here and there, some houses in the countryside, some villages with stone houses, all carefully restored. You can see that here there is love for the territory. Everything is tidy, everything is respected.

After a few kilometers I arrive in Oreglia di Sotto, an ancient hamlet and often mentioned in the local guides as one of the most beautiful in the area. And I confirm it: It's really enchanting. The house I want to show you today is right here. Giulia, the owner, is waiting for me. He's already set everything up for the visit.

Parking my pandina in private place, outside the fence. Entrance into the first garden: a stone table dominates a tea table, with lights set in for evening lighting. It is the living garden. Three steps separate the tea area from the green area, with a well-kept lawn, three historic olive trees and a majestic cork oak. I had never seen one: it is imposing, fascinating, almost magnetic.

The house of Giulia dates back to 1619, says it an engraving on a stone of the wall. It is all made of exposed stone, tastefully renovated and enhanced by precious details, inside and out. Among the exteriors stand the bread oven, the decorative rocks and the carefully chosen tree essences.

Entrance. There are three entrances. The one from the teak garden leads to the basement, furnished with kitchen furniture that appears to leave the kitchen of a starred restaurant. A gem. From here, a door leads to a room that is currently used as a dining room: two design chairs, a niche for wines, a glass table surrounded by transparent Kartell chairs. A second iron and glass door connects directly to the outside.

An internal door leads to a more collection room, with little natural light, than Giulia uses as a home theater. Terracotta flooring, stone walls, white wood ceilings: everything speaks of authenticity, refinement and beauty.

From here, a stone staircase leads to the heart of the house. And here the words begin to miss. Like Dante in front of the Paradise, mythful to describe the beauty of these rooms. Better look at the photos.

The staircase opens onto a double volume living area, with a glass fireplace and a large oil mill used as a table in a niche. In front, the third glass door opens onto the green garden. On the left, above five stone steps, there is a sitting room with a red leather armor and a suspended iron fireplace, custom-made by a craftsman. A unique piece. But I told you: to be seen, not told.

Above, a railing delimits the mezzanine, today used as a bedroom overlooking the living area.

I continue in the room next door, passing through but much less than anonymous: wooden floor, exposed roof, stone walls, a built-in table with important chairs. Two doors lead to a room today used as a bedroom and a bathroom with crystal shower. An ancient wooden staircase leads to the mezzanine. And of course I'm going up.

I welcome a white chair, a comfortable room with 5 coffers, the double bed. The walls are wrought iron railings, and above the sky. I overlook the living room and I can think of Gino Paoli: When you are here with me this room has no walls but trees, endless trees

I forgot! 50 meters from the house there is a private garden green and fenced. Here you will find, in addition to the erbet and many fruit trees, a wooden house and a carport for home cars!

I promised you a short list of the things to see in the vicinity of Oreglia di Sopra, here it is:

Rocchetta Mattei A fairytale castle from the nineteenth century, restored and open for visits, concerts and events. A unique mix of architectural styles that enchants everyone who visits it.

Grotte di Soprasasso A system of natural caves surrounded by greenery, perfect for excursions and adventures in the most authentic nature.

La Scola A perfectly preserved medieval village, with stone houses and picturesque views. Walking here is like making a leap back in time.

Waterfalls of S. Cristoforo di Labante or Aneva waterfalls A corner of spectacular nature, with waterfalls that flow from rocky walls and create suggestive water games.

Cathedral of Alvara Aalto in Riola. Unmissable.

Casa Museum of Giorgio Morandi The house where the famous painter Giorgio Morandi lived and worked, today a museum that retains works and personal objects of the artist.

Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Consolation of Montovolo A spiritual place surrounded by the silence of the mountains, with a breathtaking panoramic view and a thousand years old history.

...and many other things!
