Arpino and the Ciocia
Arpino is an ancient village in Lazio located in the province of Frosinone, in the historic region of the Ciociarium. It rises on a hill about 600 meters above sea level and is known for its ancient origins: it was inhabited by the Osci, the Volsci and then the Romans. It is famous above all for being the home of Marco Tullio Cicerone, the famous speaker and Roman philosopher.
The city retains numerous historical remains, including the acropoli of Civitavecchia with its ogiva door, unique of its kind in Italy; Cyclopean megalithic wall; Churches, buildings and well-preserved medieval views.
La Ciociaria is a historic and cultural region of central-southern Lazio, not corresponding to an administrative division but very alive in the local identity. The name derives from the "cioce", ancient peasant shoes with leather sole and laces used by the inhabitants of the area.
It is an area rich in ancient history, with Roman, medieval remains and fortified villages, popular traditions and folklore, hilly and mountain landscapes, such as those of the Valle di Comino and the Ernici Mountains.
Ladislao Castle
The oldest parts of the Castle date back to the 13th century. It owes its name to the king Ladislao I of Durazzo (1376-1414), of the angiona dynasty, which made it build or renovate as a fortress and moved its courtyard there for a period. Built on a previous "fortress" of thirteenth-century foundation.
Over the centuries it has undergone changes, damages (also for the earthquake of 1456) and various transformations.
Today the Castle of Ladislao is home to the Umberto Mastroianni Foundation, which is also a museum. and also used as an exhibition space for temporary exhibitions, lectures, educational and cultural activities.
