Fontane is a locality situated at about 1,000 meters above sea level in the municipality of Frabosa Soprana, in the province of Cuneo. The current population is around one hundred people. It is made up of several hamlets surrounding the main center (including Frera, Vinè, Filippi, Peirano, and Revelli). The center, located on a small hilltop, welcomes visitors with a charming square that serves as the town’s living room and vital core. Overlooking it are a beautiful church and a restaurant.
Continuing along the main road, you will find a small but well-stocked shop and the Ethnographic Museum, and, in the immediate vicinity of the house, a well-equipped playground for children. Everything is welcoming, lively, and well maintained.
The village offers postal service with an office open one day a week, a medical clinic with an adjoining pharmaceutical dispensary, and a daily bus connection to Mondovì. Two kilometers away begins the Bossea Caves nature reserve, a protected natural area established by the Piedmont Region in 2011. The reserve is home to the renowned Bossea Caves, a 2.8-km-long system of karst caves open to visitors, considered among the most interesting in Italy for their rich limestone formations, underground streams and lakes, and numerous paleontological remains discovered there. Classical music concerts are also held inside the caves.
Not far from Fontane lies the Casotto Valley, home to an ancient Savoy residence.
In Fontane, people speak “kye” (or “kyé”), which is not a Piedmontese dialect but Occitan, spoken in certain areas of the Ligurian and Cottian Alps, particularly in the Corsaglia and Ellero valleys and south of Mondovì. Its name comes from the personal pronoun “I” (“kyé”) and it features Ligurian influences in phonetics and Piedmontese influences in vocabulary.
The distance from Fontane to Prato Nevoso is 8–9 km via the “spartiacque” (the upper road), or 26 km via the lower road (recommended during winter).
