The historic centre of Monopoli is a jewel of popular architecture mixed with sumptuous religious buildings and splendid mansions. It is Porta Vecchia, flanked by the city walls, that introduces you to the old part of the city, lying on the Adriatic Sea and dominated by the Castle. The heart of the old town is the baroque Cathedral of Santa Maria della Madia. Not far away, the nightlife goes wild in the characteristic Piazza Garibaldi, where the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi and the Church of Santa Maria degli Amalfitani stand. Largo Palmieri is also worth a visit, with the palace of the same name and the Church of Santa Teresa.
Heralded by the outline of the castle and the ancient walls, beautiful Monopoli is reflected in the Adriatic Sea and is 40 km from Bari.
The town's 99 contrade (districts) stretch out over a flat territory, which is embraced at a glance from the splendid belvedere of Loggia del Pilato, on the road to Selva di Fasano, a natural terrace overlooking a landscape characterised by fortified masserie (farms), churches, rock settlements and villas.
The town's symbolic monument is the Carlo V Castle, winking out from the Punta Penna promontory, now a venue for exhibitions and conferences. Fortified farms, well preserved or carefully restored, are located in the heart of the marina, in the low hills and in the flat hinterland. In the countryside is the Lama degli Ulivi Botanical Garden, with caves, rock churches and over 2000 Mediterranean plant species.
Festivities include the celebrations for Saints Cosmas and Damian, on the first weekend of June, and the re-enactment of the landing of the raft with the icon of the Madonna della Madia, on 14 August and 16 December.
