Context:
Castiglione d'Otranto has remote origins. From some studies carried out it appears that it was born in the place where there was a fortress that was then destroyed in the 10th century by the Barbarians. It was autonomous municipality until 1859, when it passed under the administration of the Municipality of Andrano.
There were several baronal families who had the small center in fief: first the Rondachi of Otranto, then the Branai (Granai) Castriota (descending of Vrana Konti) and last of the Bacile of Spono.
It is thought that it was an ancient Castle of the nearby Vaste and that it was destroyed together with this in 1156 by the Barbarians. Resources in the first decades of the thirteenth century with a small agglomeration of houses, so as to be elevated to an ancient village of Terra d'Otranto.
