Main Features
Description
Located in the heart of the historic center of Morciano di Leuca, in Via Ippolitis, the building in question represents a fine example of historic stratified architecture, the result of transformations that have taken place over the centuries. The building consists of two main parts, built in different periods, which testify to the different functional and defensive needs that have characterized the history of the territory. The oldest portion of the complex dates back to the early 16th century and consists of a robust defense tower, typical of the fortifications built in the Basso Salento after the dramatic sack of Otranto from 1480. This tragic event deeply marked the collective consciousness of the Salento populations, who were forced to run to the shelters to face the continued Saracen incursions from the sea. In this context, the tower is inserted as a strategic protection element, an integral part of a larger defensive floor that has also developed in the neighboring Rione Torri, where a system of fortified towers was built with the aim of limiting external access to the utmost, through steep and narrow stairs designed to slow or prevent the advancement of the assailors. The tower, still perfectly preserved today, stands in the south-western part of the building, right towards the coast, which came the flows of the raiders. Its location was not random: oriented towards the sea, it allowed an effective view and a timely watch of the enemy ships. The architectural context of this building is part of a larger coastal defense programme promoted at national level. It was in fact during the reign of the emperor Carlo V that an ambitious campaign of building coastal towers began, then continued by its successor, Philip II, in order to ensure a watchtower and defense network that extended from the coast of Abruzzo to those of Campania. A project that had a long duration, so that the Turkish incursions continued to represent a concrete threat until the middle of the 18th century. The Torre di Palazzo Donnicola still has two charming cadastral trees, one overlooking Via Ippolitis and the other located on the southern façade, right towards the sea. These architectural elements, once used to throw objects or liquid onto the assailants, are today precious evidence of the original defensive function of the structure. Over time, and more precisely between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries, the tower was incorporated into a larger housing structure, corresponding to the current building. This transformation took place simultaneously with the definitive structure taken up by Via Ippolitis and its eastern wing, which began to emerge as a residential area and urban expansion. The tower was thus "encapsulated" in the new building, becoming the historic and identity heart of the entire building. Fortunately, many of the original features of the building have remained intact. Still today it is possible to admire the most private rooms, as well as the kitchen room, enhanced by a monumental period fireplace, perfectly preserved. The property is currently private and is intended for dining activities. A careful restoration work has allowed you to recover the high quality architectural elements, such as the ancient main entrance door and the typical Salento vaults, a symbol of local architecture. Particularly charming is the entrance to the building, made even more fascinating by a magnificent vault decorated with floral motifs carved in the tufa stone, characteristic material of the Salento buildings. Inside, the building consists of six rooms on the ground floor, overlooking a lovely garden behind. Of great interest is the cellar in the basement, embellished by a traditional barrel vault, as well as another room on the first floor, at the top of the watchtower, which today offers a privileged view of the surrounding landscape. The property is perfectly functional and equipped with all the main services: standard systems, water connection connections, sewage and natural gas. The building can continue to accommodate a dining business or, with the necessary request, be converted into a civil dwelling or a refined accommodation facility, fully enhancing its historical, architectural and tourist potential. This building is a authentic gem nestled in the urban fabric of Morciano di Leuca, a living monument of Salento history.
