The metropolitan city of Catania is located between the Mediterranean sea and the volcano Etna. In one day it is possible to enjoy a morning swim in the sea and an afternoon walk up to the Etna.
Culturally Catania can be considered a jewel city for its churches and monuments in the late Baroque Style, namely Palazzo Biscari and San Benedetto's Monastry as well as all the churches in the central Via Crociferi.
In the eighteenth century the architect Gian Battista Vaccarini has contributed to the massive rebuilding of Catania's monuments in the Sicilian Baroque Style, following the earthquake of 1693.
UNESCO, the World Organisation for the preservation of cultural and natural heritage, has included Catania, as part of the late Baroque Towns of Val di Noto in the South-eastern part of Sicily, for its outstanding  artistic value.
