HISTORY
According to a legend of Castiglione origin written by Anton Giulio Filoteo degli Omodei, or by his son, after the Messina Vespers uprising (1282), the Dauphin of France descended to Sicily and was hosted by the feudal lord of Castiglione, Ruggero di Lauria (the fiefdom of Castiglione is 5 km from Francavilla). The Dauphin fell in love with Angelina, the feudal lord's daughter, a love reciprocated by the girl. It is said that the Dauphin immediately had to leave for France but promised Angelina he would return so they could elope together. The Prince's return was announced with luminous signals, fires, visible from the two castles of Francavilla and Castiglione.

Franca, Angelina's maid, was supposed to help her mistress await the Dauphin's return, but she loved to fall asleep, so the lady of the castle was forced to urge her to stay awake: "Franca, vigghia! pi mia Franca, vigghia" (i.e., "Franca, vigghia, do it for me, Franca, vigghia"). Later, wishing to commemorate the legend of Angelina, they built a castle on the hill from which the Dauphin's light signals arrived, and named the cluster of residences Francaveglia, Italianized to "Francavilla." But the story is quite different. With this legend, some citizens of Castiglione wanted to reconfirm their supposed historical and economic supremacy over Francavilla.
