HISTORY According to a legend of Castiglione origin written by Anton Giulio Filoteo degli Omodei, or by his son, after the Messina Vespers uprising (1282), the Dauphin of France descended to Sicily and was hosted by the feudal lord of Castiglione, Ruggero di Lauria (the fiefdom of Castiglione is 5 km from Francavilla). Later, wishing to commemorate the legend of Angelina, they built a castle on the hill from which the Dauphin's light signals arrived, and named the cluster of residences Francaveglia, Italianized to "Francavilla."
