Vico d'Elsa is a small halmet in the municipality of Barberino Val d'Elsa.
Vico d'Elsa is an urban agglomeration of medieval origin located in a strategic position on a hill overlooking the middle Val d'Elsa. Being located near the Via Francigena it enjoyed considerable importance in the Middle Ages. It still preserves the original medieval nucleus with an elliptical shape, consisting of two parallel streets and two squares located at opposite ends of the town. The two streets rejoin near the gates of the village, which no longer exist today. At the time of the war fought between Florence and Semifonte in 1202, Vico d'Elsa was one of the latter's main allies. Diplomatic meetings between the Semifontesi and the ambassadors of San Gimignano were held in the castle of Vico to prepare the counter-offensive against the Florentines but the negotiation failed. After the fall of Semifonte, Vico d'Elsa also became part of the Florentine Republic.
