Lying in a wide basin at the foot of the Apuan Alps, Camaiore is a town of ancient foundation and owes its origins to the Romans who, after founding Lucca, built a number of outposts on the slopes of Monte Prana. Among these was Camaiore, which in fact owes its name to the ancient toponym Campus Major, with which the wide plain connecting Lucca to the port of Luni was identified.
Today, Camaiore shows in the stately buildings of its historic centre, evidence of the events that made up its past: among these are the beautiful Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with a Latin cross plan, dating back to 1260; the Church of San Lazzaro, with its cloister; and the austere and Longobard Badia di San Pietro, founded around the 8th century. Palazzo Tori Massoni, now housing the Archaeological Museum, is also well worth a visit.
In the centre of the village, the Camaiore Museum of Sacred Art is not to be missed. It was created to collect and conserve paintings, furnishings and sacred vestments dating from between the 14th and 16th centuries.
Since the Second World War, Camaiore has become increasingly well-known thanks to its Lido. In fact, Lido di Camaiore is a pleasant and elegant seaside resort overlooking the wide beach of Versilia. Since the beginning of the 20th century, its gracefulness has won over personalities such as Gabriele D'Annunzio, Eleonora Duse and Vittorio Emanuele III.
