The hills on either side of the river rise steeply and are flanked with dense woodlands, scattered farms, rivers and streams. The hilltop villages offer splendid views across the valley. The largest towns in the region are Barga and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana with picturesque medieval town centres, restaurants, shops and supermarkets. Barga higher in the hills is dominated by the ancient cathedral and has a famous theatre house. The villages offer breathtaking views, traditional restaurants, orchards and vineyards. Equidistant, and just 20 mins away, are the medieval market towns of Fivizzano and bustling Aulla with supermarkets, shops, motorway and train station.

Fivizzano a medieval walled town with a central cobbled piazza is often referred to as the Florence of Lunigiana.
