Here, well before the year 1000, a massive watchtower was erected for observation and control along the and quot;Lombard road, and quot; one of the most important of the time, which rose from the valley floor up to the Cirone pass and from here reached the centers of the Po Valley. Today, this ancient road can still be traveled on foot or even by mountain bike, until reaching the meadows of Logarghena. Today, only a few traces of that medieval 'fort' remain, recently restored and accessible thanks to a daring iron staircase that leads to the space above, at the northern edge of the town, in front of the facade of the parish church that can be seen from kilometers away. Ruins of a fortification that was sought after and contested at what, in the Middle Ages, was the southern border of the free municipality of Pontremoli. And where the ancient 'Rocca Valsazzulina' was a strategic outpost. Whoever owned it could control the crossings to and from the Apennines on the left bank of the Magra, avoiding the problematic passage through Pontremoli.
