The modern history of the stele statues of Lunigiana, the particular prehistoric monuments typical of the lands straddling Liguria and Tuscany, began on a specific date, December 29, 1827, and in a specific place, the locality of Novà di Zignago, a hill in the upper Val di Vara: here the first known stele statue was found, which later went down in history as the 'Zignago stele.' As of today, there are 85 stele statues, most of which are preserved in the above-mentioned museum: the most recent find is the head of Monte Galletto, discovered in March 2021 by a person who was walking through the countryside around Pontremoli. Finding a stele statue, or even just a fragment of it, is a rare event: to give an idea, it is enough to think that in the last ten years only four discoveries have been registered. And always in a fortuitous manner: usually by hikers walking through the woods or, as in the case of the eighty-second, found near Licciana Nardi, by a farmer who was uprooting a vineyard.
