Il Classico Winery: Organic Medieval Village with Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione and 135 hectares – Castellina in Chianti, Siena – Tuscany
REF. CNT311
A thousand-year-old village in the heart of Chianti Classico
Set amongst the hills of Castellina in Chianti, at an altitude of between 250 and 550 metres, lies one of Tuscany’s most comprehensive and fascinating organic wine estates: 135.6 hectares of land, an 11th-century stone village and a state-of-the-art winery that embodies forty years of dedication to quality.
The vineyard and production
Across 33.3 hectares of vineyards — of which 15.3 ha are Chianti Classico DOCG and 18.0 ha are Toscana IGT — Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are grown, all trained using the spurred cordon method. The estate has been certified organic since 2009. Annual production stands at around 75,000 bottles — 75% of which are distributed on foreign markets — with a potential of up to 200,000 bottles, divided into four labels: Chianti Classico DOCG, Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione, Toscana Rosso IGT and Toscana Bianco IGT. Rounding off the range is a fine selection of DOP-certified organic extra virgin olive oil produced from 4.7 hectares of olive groves planted with Correggiolo, Moraiolo and Leccino cultivars, yielding up to 2,100 kg annually.
The winemaking and ageing cellar covers 2,077 square metres: colonnades, arches and high vaulted ceilings blend with state-of-the-art winemaking technology.
The village and the manor house
The core of the complex is the 11th-century medieval village, skilfully converted into holiday apartments and a manor house.
The 1,228-square-metre manor house is spread over three levels, featuring a living room with a fireplace, studies, halls, 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms on the main floor, an independent apartment and further residential rooms on the upper floor.
A second building houses a further 3-bedroom residential unit, a tasting room and a vinsanto cellar.
The second part of the estate, comprising offices, the winery and tasting rooms welcomes visitors with the authentic charm of exposed brickwork and historic vaults.
The land also comprises 47.4 hectares of arable land suitable for new vineyards and 48.2 hectares of woodland, with just 200 metres of unpaved road from the entrance.
