Le Colombare Castle stands on a hill overlooking Lake Trasimeno, in the very same area where, in 217 BC, Hannibal’s legions inflicted one of the most resounding defeats in ancient history upon the Romans. The watchtower dominating the complex has stood there ever since, with its pointed-arch windows, dovecotes carved into the sandstone and the brick corbels crowning the summit: the dovecotes that give this place its name, and which make it recognisable from afar like few other castles in the world.History and recognitionThe property is classified as a National Monument and appears as ‘Castel Fiume’ in the fresco in the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican Museums, one of the few private properties in the world that can claim this kind of historical recognition.
