Casa Maggiore is perfectly positioned: on the edge of the piazza, a few moments from two excellent restaurants, and only a minute from the shops and cafes of the Corso. One side of the house looks over the piazza and the town, the other over the valley to the mountains.

The door from the piazza leads into a small entrance lobby, from which stairs lead to the two main floors. The upper floor has an elegant sitting room with fireplace, and a balcony overlooking the piazza. The kitchen looks out over the lower part of town and the valley. On this level, there is also the master bedroom and bathroom.

The lower level as currently used has two bedrooms, a bathroom, an office used by one of the owners, who is a doctor, and a waiting area. The office could also be a fourth bedroom, or alternatively, the waiting area and office can be reopened and a wall kitchen installed to make a separate apartment.

There is also a large old cellar under the building - this is accessed not from the piazza, but from the street running down from the piazza, so there is street level entry to it even though it is the level below the entrance hall.

PIGLIO AND THE CIOCIARIA

Piglio is a charming town, which (rather unusually) combines generally good street access with traditional cobbled alleyways. The home of Cesanese del Piglio DOC wine, it has an excellent yearly wine festival, and the town itself has a good selection of cafes, bars, restaurants and shops.

Piglio is part of the the Ciociaria.  The Ciociaria region of Italy  is within easy reach of both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day's shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter drive brings you to the charming beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await with horse trekking in the magnificent beech forests, and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can swim in the heat of the summer.

Often overlooked, both by tourists and by those foreigners in search of an Italian home, in favour of the more publicized regions of Tuscany and Umbria, the Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt gem with beautiful scenery and medieval hilltop towns. A home or second home in the Ciociaria, in the hilltop towns of Piglio, Anagni, Arpino, Veroli or in the rolling countryside that surrounds them, will afford you a setting where over two thousand years of history combine with an idyllic rural Italian lifestyle, where you can still discover the 'real' Italy and take time out from the busy crowds of the larger tourist cities, while being less than ninety minutes journey from central Rome or either of Rome's two airports.
