History of Toscolano Maderno
Since the Lombard era, the area had been part of the court of the Monastery of San Colombano of the Priory of Bardolino and of the priory of Solarolo (Manerba del Garda), dependent on the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio (PC) and of the great monastic feud of Bobbio .The monks evangelized the area by promoting the expansion of commerce, agriculture (especially vines and olive trees), the fishing system, and culture, introducing important innovations and opening trade routes. Toscolano, in particular, boasts Roman origins, testified by the remains of a large villa of which, today, parts of the floor decorated with mosaics can be seen and which would have been the property of the Roman consul Marco Nonio Macrino. The parish church of Toscolano, founded in 1571 and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, was for a long time the summer seat of the diocese of Brescia. It contains an important pictorial cycle by the Venetian artist Andrea Celesti. In the final part of the valley of the Toscolano river, the paper industry developed starting from 1300, one of the first and most important places in Europe. For this reason, this stretch of the valley is called the "Valley of the Paper Mills".
