BRUNATE, known as the balcony of the Pre-Alps, the small village is situated on a wooded plateau above Como. Thanks to its panoramic location and the altitude at which it is situated, Brunate became one of Lombardy's major holiday resorts in the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries. The flow of tourists as well as the arrival in the village of the Milanese upper middle class was also made possible by the construction of the Como-Brunate Funicular in 1894. On reaching Brunate one can enjoy a splendid panorama. From there one can see the entire western Alpine arc, the Po Valley and the Apennines. There are several viewpoints such as the Belvedere, the wide churchyard of the church of S. Andrea, the traffic circle of Marenghi Park in S. Maurizio, and the overhanging Lighthouse.
