Description
CASTIGLIONE OF THE PESCIA (GR)
Authentic medieval tower from the 11th century
General description and history
Sale of an authentic medieval tower inside a castle in the countryside of Castiglione Della Pescaia.
The castle stood on a small floor around the year a thousand as a convent structure that, over time, was abandoned by the monks and converted into a fortified structure. Afterwards it was purchased by local gentlemen who turned it into their residence and accepted the subjection in Siena from 1331.
With the fall of the Republic of Siena, the castle was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, while remaining private.
From the eighteenth century onwards, a series of renovations carried out until the 20th century has largely modified the original medieval appearance. However, their particular layout highlights the original functions of a convent, whose bell tower, is the one that has almost intact the original appearance of medieval times.
It has a square section, with a cordated shoe base and completely stone walls, where there are some windows on three levels above the cord that delimits the base above. The top part, covered by a 4-spoken roof that is not very pronounced and clad with the classic Tuscan brick, is the result of a later reconstruction that has definitively turned the ancient bell tower into the current tower.
