Did you know that Italy is the ‘country of the year’ for 2021 according to the prestigious international newspaper which is The Economist?

The award was established in 2013 and since then it goes to a country that stands out for something special showing great results in a number of areas. So over the past years other winner countries included Tunisia for embracing democracy or Uzbekistan for abolishing slavery just to give an example.

The reasons: Italy’s economic growth and high vaccination rate

According to The Economist most of the credit for Italy as the best country in the world goes to Mario Draghi.

The Prime Minister is a “competent and respected internationally” person, so much so that that for the first time in a long while the large majority of Italian politicians are working together towards the same goals. This is making Italy a better place.

The well-known British weekly said that there is a “majority that has buried its differences in support of a programme of sweeping reforms” in the light of the EU-funded post-COVID National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

As a result the Italian economy is recovering and growing faster than that of other countries like France and Germany.

That’s why according to recent polls three Italians out of four want him to stay as premier until the natural end of the parliamentary term in 2023.

Another reason that pushed the magazine to recognize Italy as the best country of the year is its response to the coronavirus. As a matter of fact today Italy is one of the countries with the highest vaccination rate in Europe with 89% vaccinated with at least one dose and 86% fully vaccinated as of today.
