Ciociaria is a really unspoilt destination in Central Italy situated just 1 hour drive from Rome, Naples and its airports. It is perfectly positioned a few kilometres from the mountains in Abruzzo region and the sea with the marvellous Coast of Ulysses, a 110 km stretch of coastline which runs south from the beaches of Latina in Lazio to the border with Campania region.

Let’s discover more about Ciociaria through the eyes of our selected local estate agent Claudia Alfano from Alfano Real Estate that we have chosen among those advertising on Gate-away.com.

What does Ciociaria have to offer?

These are the 3 main things Ciociaria offers according to Claudia Alfano.

Medieval picturesque villages dotting Ciociaria

The province of Frosinone, which coincides with Ciociaria, was a border land between the ancient Papal States and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies during the Middle Ages. So its territory hosted numerous historical events involving Popes and monarchs from all over Europe.

It’s now an exclusive destination for history enthusiasts with its striking small towns and hamlets (91) dotting the area like Arpino, Isola del Liri, Santopadre, Rocca d’Arce and San Donato Val Comino just to name a few.

It has a plethora of abbeys and churches, castles and archaeological areas, but also acropolises and Cyclopean walls, which are ancient gigantic pre-Roman fortifications in polygonal masonry enclosing urban centres with an enormous visual impact within their perimeters.

Ciociaria is extremely rich in caves, oasis and nature reserves

You’ll be able to benefit from the contact with nature, but also to practice water sports (kayaking, scuba diving and fishing), golf, trekking, climbing, cycling and skiing.

Ciociaria is also rich in thermal baths. Just think of Fiuggi thermal complex whose waters treat kidney stones. It has been well-known since the times of Pope Boniface VIII. Also Cassino and Ferentino are spa towns.

The magnetic Ulysses’ Riviera

From one of its unique hamlets you can reach the sea resorts and its beaches stretching along the scenic Ulysses’ Riviera Regional Park in just 35 minutes driving.

Its coastal pearls are Formia, Sabaudia, Gaeta and Sperlonga. From these wonderful towns you can also reach by ferry the marvellous islands of Ponza and Ventotene.

7 must-eat dishes to eat in Ciociaria:

Ciociaria is known for its food and wine tradition.

Curzio Malaparte – Italian writer, filmmaker, war correspondent during WW2 and diplomat – said that he began to smell the taste and smell of Ciociaria many kilometers before he arrived to the area when driving up to the north of the peninsula from Naples during the postwar period.

Ciociaria cuisine is made of local, genuine and tasty ingredients, some of which are generally defined as ‘poor’, such as potatoes or beans.

Claudia Alfano highly recommends these 7 must-eat dishes:

  • Fettuccine alla Ciociara (prepared in different variations)
  • Polenta
  • Artichokes which are cooked in many ways (fried, in batter, ‘alla giudia’, etc.)
  • Sagne (homemade pasta) with local beans from Atina
  • Ciammaruche (snails in sauce)
  • Amaretti di Guarcino (cookies made of egg whites, sugar, almond flour, and almond extract)
  • Ciambelline al vino (sweet wine ring-shaped cookies)

Watch them in this video and tell us which one you would like to taste.
