In which area or region of Italy are you looking for your property in Italy or would you like to buy one? How do you name them when searching for them on the Internet? 

Gate-away.com has asked about 40,000 international potential buyers looking for a home in the peninsula. 

For a more detailed analysis, international investors have been asked in their own language (i.e.: English, French, German, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, and Russian).

These are the results of this survey conducted in October 2022. 

The most famous Italian regions by overseas would-be buyers

This survey results show that international investors know the peninsula quite well.

The most famous region is Tuscany. The only exceptions are the Russian speakers. For them in first place there’s Tuscany but also Abruzzo and Liguria.

Overall from second position onward are many regions of Italy from north to south. So for the English and French speakers we find Sicily; for the Spanish and Dutch speakers is Lombardy; for the Russian and Swedish speakers is Liguria, and for the Portuguese speaker is Veneto.

In third place are Umbria for the English speakers, Liguria for the French speakers, Trentino Alto Adige for the German speakers, Piedmont for the Spanish speakers, Emilia Romagna for the Portuguese speakers, Le Marche for the Dutch speakers and Lombardy for the Swedish speakers.

In what area would international investors like to buy a house in Italy?

Overall, almost for those who answered to the survey, the sea is the most sought-after location for their ideal property in Italy. For example for 35.80% of the French-speakers.

An exception are the Portuguese speakers. For them the city accounts for a good 20% of all their answers while the Dutch speakers prefer the countryside for 18.30%.

What terms do overseas buyers use when searching for a home in Italy on the Internet?

When English speakers look for a property for sale in Italy on the World Wide Web, they mainly use the following terms: ‘Property/properties for sale in Italy’ and ‘Seaside homes’.

The French speakers often use ‘Maison a vendre en Italie/pas cher en Italie’ (house for sale in Italy/cheap).

For the German and Spanish speakers the most used word is ‘sea’ so respectively ‘Immobilien/Haus am Meer’ and ‘Orilla del mar’ and ‘Casas con vista al mar’.

The Portuguese speakers search for ‘Casas a venda na Italia’ sometimes adding also the price they would like to spend.

The Dutch speakers mainly use ‘property for sale/in Italy’ (‘Huis te koop, Huis kopen in italië’). The Swedish speakers get straight to the point by typing ‘Tuscany and Ligurian coast’. Finally the Russian speakers use ‘Дом в Италии’ (‘house in Italy’), ‘Квартира в Лигурии’ (‘apartment in Liguria’).
